Some people think crochet is just yarn and stitches. Loops and hooks. Patterns and toys.
But to me, crochet is so much more. It’s connection. It’s kindness. It’s community.
It’s a quiet kind of magic that finds its way into the softest corners of life.
This week, something happened that reminded me just how much crochet has given me not just in toys, or patterns, or a business… but in gratitude.
Let me share that story with you.
The Grandmother From My Giveaway
Back in May 2025, I ran a small giveaway — nothing fancy, just a sweet little bunny rabbit made with love. A grandmother entered and won. She was so happy. The kind of happy you can feel through the screen.
A few days later, she reached out again and asked if I could make her grandson a shark. He adored sharks, and she wanted a handmade one just for him. I gently told her no, not because I didn’t want to, but because I no longer take custom orders. I’ve learned from experience that the demand becomes overwhelming, and I lose the joy and peace that crochet brings me.
She understood.
She was kind.
And that was that.
Or so I thought.

(above is his shark today, it’s been well loved!)
That Shark That Found Me
Months passed.
And then, in November, something unexpected happened.
I stumbled across a free shark pattern, one of those patterns so adorable it stops you mid-scroll. The kind that immediately makes you think: “Oh… I have to make this.”
And instantly, without hesitation, I thought of her. The grandmother who had asked so gently. The one who wanted a shark for her grandson but never pushed. It felt like the universe nudged the idea into my hands. So I picked up my yarn. I threaded my hook.
And I began to stitch. Round by round, the shark took shape, cheerful, soft, perfectly cute. It felt good. Effortless. Right. And when I finished, I messaged her.
Her Reaction Was Pure Joy When I handed her the shark, her face lit up in the softest, most genuine way.
She gasped.
She hugged it.
She couldn’t believe it.
And then, in that sweet, grandmother way, she gifted me a box of chocolates, just to say thank you. Not because she needed to. Not because she owed me anything. But because kindness invites kindness. And that moment made my whole week.
The Gratitude Crochet Brings Into My Life
I didn’t make the shark because of money. Or obligation. Or expectation.
I made it because crochet is a gift that flows through me.
It gives me: peace | creativity | connection | purpose | softness | community
And sometimes, crochet lets me give those gifts to others — in tiny, unexpected moments that turn into warm memories.
Crochet has brought me: friendships | stories | confidence | a business built from love | a way to slow down | a way to create magic from nothing but yarn
And moments like this remind me just how blessed I am.
Crochet Is More Than a Craft — It’s a Blessing
Crochet teaches me gratitude every day.
Gratitude for:
the people who buy my patterns
the toys that make children smile
the grandparents who share their stories
the soft rhythm that calms my busy mind
the opportunities that come from a small ball of yarn
the love that flows through every stitch
And gratitude for the unexpected moments, like a grandmother returning with chocolates, that remind me I’m part of something bigger and gentler than simply selling toys.
Crochet will always be a gift.
A gift I create.
A gift I receive.
A gift I get to share with the world.
And every once in a while, a story comes along — like the grandmother, the shark, the chocolates — that reminds me: What I make with my hands brings joy not just to others, but back into my own heart, over and over again.
And for that, I am endlessly grateful.
